Proposed FCC rules could prevent open source software being installed onto routers.
I’ve been reading about the issue over time, but after this slashdot article, I decided to leave a comment for the FCC to consider. Below is a copy of my comments.
The proposed regulation would possibly make it so that it is impossible to
modify router firmware. Not only is this proposed regulation overbroad, but it
forces proprietary software on hardware that has efficient and popular open
source alternatives in the wild already. Proprietary software is, by definition,
immoral and harmful to users. If the rule is passed I would have no choice but
to boycott wireless routers that make it impossible to modify the firmware.
